Product Description
Skills-based Learning for Caring for a Loved One with an Eating Disorder equips carers with the skills and knowledge needed to support and encourage those suffering from an eating disorder, and to help them to break free from the traps that prevent recovery. Through a coordinated approach, this book offers information alongside detailed techniques and strategies, which aim to improve professionals' and home carers' ability to build continuity and consistency of support for their loved ones. The authors use evidence-based research and personal experience, as well as practical support skills, to advise the reader on a number of difficult areas in caring for someone with an eating disorder. These include: - working towards positive change through good communications skills
- developing problem solving skills
- building resilience
- managing difficult behaviour.
This book is essential reading for both professionals and families involved in the care and support of anyone with an eating disorder. It will enable the reader to use the skills, information and insight gained to help change eating disorder symptoms.

Customer Reviews: Skills-based learning fro caring for a loved one with an eating disorder April 18, 2008 Robert R. Lockart 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Very concise and clear with guidelines that a non-trained carer can understand as well a a trained therapist.

I found this book very helpful for both practitioners that work with patients struggling with an eating disorder and for parents of children with eating disorders. My previous exposure of Maudsley was a very hands on approach that parents may need to wear a "dictatorship" hat in the feeding. This book was nothing of the sort. The "New" Maudsley Method creatively weaved motivational interviewing and stage of readiness for change that results in an empowering role for the parent or other care giver. Thank you Jane Treasure et al for this book!
From a Father December 22, 2008 E. Meyer (Lawrence Kansas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book was very well written with good insights and practical suggestions on how best to support and interact with a loved one suffering from an eating disorder. Perhaps the only criticism I have is that it seemed to be more directed to younger folks suffering. My daughter is in her early 30's and some of the areas were not applicable.
