Product Description While the author agrees that breast is best and provides all the latest information on breastfeeding including how to overcome common problems, she stresses that the most important thing is that baby is fed — whether by breast or bottle.

| Customer Reviews: Saved my breastfeeding July 4, 2009 LondonMom (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I completely disagree with the previous negative reviews here. As a mom who struggled with breastfeeding my baby for the first few months, this book was one of the main factors that kept me going. Breastfeeding is not just a natural, intuitive, pain-free endeavor, even if your baby is "latching on" properly...the other sources that make it seem like an all or nothing thing, or like you're an awful mother if you can't breastfeed exclusively for 2 years, are actually counterproductive in my view. If I hadn't found this book and other similar-minded professionals, I probably would have quit after the first week. Clare Byam-Cook is a well-respected lactation consultant in the UK, and in my opinion, the information in this book reflects reality a lot more than some of the LLL propaganda I've read. But yes, if you're a breastfeeding zealot and think it's the easiest thing in the world, don't bother with this book. But if you want to breastfeed and not have to beat yourself up for using a pacifier or expressed milk in a bottle or (gasp!) mixed feed with formula if needed, give this one a go.
Beyond the zealots August 9, 2007 C. Goff (London, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I beg to differ with the previous poor reviews of this book. Byam-Cook does not agree with the airy-fairy idealism of La Leche, and takes a more moderate view. There ARE cases where women can't breastfeed. There ARE situations when it is helpful to bottle feed with expressed milk. Byam-Cook is a strong advocate of breastfeeding, and has helped hundreds of families do so successfully (including mine). I recommend this book highly.
That said, I think the book would be better if it had a great many more pictures and diagrams.
NOT Helpful if your REALLY want to Breastfeed July 6, 2002 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book will NOT help you succeed in breastfeeding your baby. It will make you feel better about not breastfeeding though. DO NOT use this as your breastfeeding manual. Her strategy which includes reasons for sore nipples, giving bottles, having baby sleep in own crib are all things that can undermine successful breastfeeding. Also, it has very few pictures which can be helpful when getting started.
Making it easy for breastfeeding moms to give up July 15, 2002 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book makes it easy for breastfeeding moms to give up and not feel guilty about it. If you think you will cop out and want to feel better about yourself, buy this book ...and do what's best for your child.
incorrect breastfeeding information July 7, 2002 Daniel Rosen (New Jersey) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book contains information that is SO INACCURATE that the author should be put on notice to write about other subjects and leave breastfeeding to the experts like La Leche League, Dr. Sears or Jack Newman. Her errors and bad advice are too numerous to catalogue and are sure to help a new mother FAIL at breastfeeding. So, if you really don't want to be successful at breastfeeding, then read this book. Otherwise, read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League, The Breastfeeding Book by Dr. William Sears or the new Ultimate Book of Breastfeeding Answers by Dr. Jack Newman. All of those are excellent.
